We shape the personalities we present to the world, performing some parts of the "self" while filtering out others. Despite their fabrication, these "personas" become closer and closer to identity. Exploring the complexities between performance and person has left me wondering, what is the relationship between performance and our "true selves"?
I began my investigation by projecting my concepts onto models, and experimenting with accessories and expressions to convey my ideas. I use striking lighting to emphasize performance, idealization, and conflict. In works 5-7 I went out of my comfort zone to investigate how different types of performance relate to my inquiry. I was inspired by drag artists and Cindy Sherman to embody persona myself, by exploring social archetypes (works 8-11). In the last few works the personas are slowly stripped away, leaving us raw, vulnerable, and curious about this new image of "self."
